This is a final piece from the Radio Playmaking course, a second- and third-year option in the Department of Drama & Theatre taught by Professor Christine Dymkowski, which is concerned with the ‘making’ of radio drama in both senses of the word. First of all, it explores what distinguishes radio drama from drama merely broadcast on radio: that is, what kind of play can be fully realised only through the medium of sound? Second, it requires the students themselves to make such a play, writing or adapting it and then realising it in a recording. The final projects for the course, which has run in 2005-6, 2006-7, 2008-9, 2009-10, and 2011-12, have varied from adaptations of classic, contemporary, and children’s literature to original plays for radio, lasting 20 to 30 minutes. We hope you enjoy listening to them!
